Presidents Weekend, February 18 through 21, 2022

Join Wyncote Audubon to participate in the 25th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) this weekend!  The GBBC is scheduled for Presidents Weekend, February 18 – 21, 2022. The GBBC was launched twenty-five years ago in 1998. It has become one of the largest and most widely participated community science events. Birds Canada, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the National Audubon Society sponsor the GBBC. It is easy to participate! Go to https://www.birdcount.org to learn more. You can participate on your own from your own backyard or join one of the several events supported by the Wyncote Audubon Society!

 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM on Friday, February 18th at Briar Bush Nature Center: Wyncote Audubon will again partner with Briar Bush Nature Center, 1212 Edgehill Road, Abington, PA 19001, to host a GBBC event at the Griscom Observatory. Stop by to help count birds for the GBBC. Please note that this event is free, masks are required and there will be a limit of 10 people in the bird observatory at a time. This event is open to all families and individuals. Binoculars will be on loan for participants. No preregistration is required.

10:00 AM to Noon on Saturday, February 19th at Fox Chase Farm, 8500 Pine Road, Philadelphia, PA 19111. This event will begin with an introduction to the GBBC, common winter birds, and the use of binoculars. This event will start in the classroom followed by a bird walk around portions of the farm. After the walk, the participants will return to the Classroom to return the loaner binoculars and finalize our checklist of birds. No preregistration is necessary.

8:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Sunday, February 20th at the Discovery Center, 3401 Reservoir Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19121: Join DVOC, Wyncote Audubon, and folks from the Discovery Center for a morning walk around the reservoir for this special Great Backyard Bird Count event. We will count birds during our walk around the reservoir. We will also be treated to an art installation created by Tori Sindlinger, a former Wyncote Audubon Griscom Scholar to the Audubon Hog Island Camp in Maine. We will also learn more about Bird Safe Philly and volunteer opportunities. No preregistration is required.

 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Monday, February 21st at the Tacony Creek Park Bingham and Ashdale Street Gateway: Wyncote Audubon will again partner with the Tookany/Tacony Frankford Watershed Partnership to provide a GBBC Bird Walk in Tacony Creek Park. Meet by the deer painting on the trail located near the park entrance at the intersection of Bingham and Ashdale Streets. This event is free, and masks and binoculars will be provided. 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM on Monday, February 21st at High School Park, Elkins Park, PA 19027 Wyncote Audubon volunteers will help with the GBBC event scheduled for High School Park on Presidents Day afternoon. The program will start with an introduction to the GBBC, bird identification, and the use of binoculars. A bird walk through the park will follow.
