Wyncote Audubon Society Annual Dinner

Wyncote Audubon Society Annual Dinner

We hope you can join us for this year’s wonderful speaker, Kevin Karlson. Social hour will be at 5:00PM, followed by dinner at 6:00, and our program at 7:00PM.

Birding by Impression: A Different Approach to Knowing and Identifying Birds

Kevin Karlson will share a new slant to field identification that he and his co-author and wife, Dale Rosselet, call Birding by Impression: A Different Approach to Knowing and Identifying Birds, which is the title of their new book in the Roger Tory Peterson Reference Series at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers. This presentation encourages a conscious assessment of body shape and physical features of birds prior to analyzing traditional ID field marks. This results in a more holistic approach to birding that includes right and left brain strengths to enhance your birding skills as well as a greater awareness of bird’s behavior, movements and natural history rather than just a check on your personal list.

Kevin will further explain his approach, encouraging the audience to spot differences between similar species in direct side-by-side comparison. This exciting ID approach concentrates on basic impressions of size, body shape, structural features and motion to form an accurate first impression of birds, with analysis of plumage details and bare parts to follow. He will also show several videos and a musical ending, allowing for a relaxed appreciation of the beauty and intriguing nature of birds.
